Hi guys, I’m not dead after all! Yippee! All jokes aside, today’s recipe was stupid. It’s a thing called a ‘Pot au Feu’. You may have heard of it before, but trust me, this is different. She says it’s about presentation. The idea of having an endless pot of meat. She says that you have the the pot on the table, and you dig in, and take a piece of beef out, then you dig in again, you find a piece of pork. Then you return to the pan, and take out a whole chicken. Finally, you take out a sausage.
So now you have the general idea, it’s time to execute it. You start by putting a lump of beef, some bones and some vegetables in a pan, and covering in stock (i didn’t have enough so I used some water as well). Simmer for an hour. Then, add a lump of pork and a whole chicken continue cooking for a further hour and a half. Then add some turnips, some carrots and some leeks, and cook for another hour and a half. Add a sausage and finish cooking for a half hour. It’s absolute madness. Have you any idea how much meat there is in this? I can’t tell you what it was like quite yet, lunch first…
I made some gratinated endives. To do this, I put them in the oven with some butter, then wrapping them in ham, pouring some egg and cream on top, grating on some cheese, and returning it to the oven for half an hour. It was nice. It wasn’t too heavy either! not like the other one… I also made a mayonnaise type thing to go with the stew, basically i made a mayonnaise but with soft boiled egg yolk. Plus i added some capers and stuff. Okay, now you get to know about the stew. It was… well, meaty. the chicken fell apart when I pulled it out, it had been boiling for 3 and a half hours, and you couldn’t really differentiate between the beef and the pork, but it was good. Would I make it again? God no, you don’t get the best of all the meats, you get something that tastes a bit brown.
That was long. I think it would be better with mixed meats from the same animal, like pork, salt pork and sausage or something along those lines. The choicken didn’t sit right either, but what do I know? I’m not cooking Iggy, I’m editing Iggy! I gotta go make some bad life decisions. bye!
